The new Mayor of Eastbourne is encouraging people to put their best foot forward in aid of his three chosen charities.

Councillor Pat Rodohan’s first fundraising event in office was the Mayor’s Charity Seafront Walk on Sunday, July 18.  This event raised an amazing £1300 for his nominated good causes for the year – Amaze, Community Wise and Holding Space.

Amaze (amazesussex.org.uk) helps families with disabled children and young people in Sussex with information, advice and support.

Community Wise (communitywise.org.uk) is a busy community centre in the Motcombe area used by people of all ages and backgrounds for activities ranging from toddler groups to a charity shop.

Holding Space (holdingspace.org.uk) supports parents, carers, children and families who are struggling with their mental health, providing face-to-face, telephone and online help.

Councillor Rodohan said: “I have chosen three fantastic charities which are close to my heart and they all need fundraising support from the community to help them meet demand for their services.

The next event is a Quiz Night with Ploughman’s Supper at the Town Hall on Friday 24th September at 7 pm.  Anyone wishing to join is asked to register in advance with the Mayor’s Office at mayorsoffice@lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk or phone 01323 415020.

KEEP IN TOUCH SCHEME

During lockdown, two staff from the Centre worked at home, and recruited 6 additional volunteers – to run a phone-call-based keeping in touch scheme from April to August 2020.

Funded by the Communities Can Grants programme, the team were able to ring people daily, or several times a week, for a catch up call and chat. People were either referred to the scheme by other agencies, or had existing links to the Centre, and were either isolated or vulnerable.

Up to 70 people were contacted, and over 2,000 calls were made and conversations had to ensure people were ok and safe in their circumstances.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Since lock down and building closure, the Trustees of Community Wise have completed a Risk Assessment, and after an initial deep clean have erected screens and made the necessary adjustments to signage, room occupancy and cleaning procedures.  Our premises are Covid secure.  Thank you to Upperton and Old Town Devolved budgets for a grant of £900 which covered most of these costs.

Community Wise is known for its warmth and welcome.
