How we are funded

Wise Buys - our community shop - is a hub of community life generating vital income for Community Wise. The Manageress is helped by an enthusiastic team of hardworking volunteers, supported by hundreds of local people who donate top quality goods.

Some donated items are sent for auction - but most of the funds come from local people buying nearly new clothes and bric-a-brac from the shop. With items priced from only 20p upwards it is possible to get fitted out from top-to-toe for less than £10.00.

In addition to money raised through Wise Buys, funds are raised by letting the building at certain times and from occasional grants.

Community Wise completed a refurbishment of the enclosed back area of the premises in April 16.  We would like to thank the following for their grants and donations:

The Garfield Weston Foundation; The Beatrice Laing Trust; The GEM; All Churches Trust; The Henry Smith Charity; The Rank Foundation; The Barnabas Trust, The Bernard Sunley Foundation, Sussex Community Foundation, ASDA Community Fund, Eastbourne Upperton Ward and Old Town Wards Devolved Budgets; Police Property Fund; Waitrose; Reid-Briggs Insurance Brokers; Tennants Property Rentals, RM Pettitt Recycling and many individuals who have given generously and sacrificially.

Community Wise has previously undertaken substantial phased refurbishments in order to upgrade its fifty year old premises and make it accessible to disabled people.

A lift has been installed, a new foyer has been added to the front and, by reordering space, a new suite of small rooms has been created. The parking area at the front has been renewed with new steps, a new ramp and a new surface. A new toilet suite, including a fully accessible toilet for wheelchair users has been installed. These were completed during 2006/07. In 2012 our upstairs kitchen has been fully refurbished and new fully accessible toilets fitted. The Sussex Community Foundation contributed £3,500 towards these improvements. We also received money from Freetricity to install 42 solar panels on our roof in 2012.
